Ford Oaks Solar Park

Oaklands Solar Farm is a major new solar and battery project near Bonvilston in the Vale of Glamorgan, delivering green growth and stronger energy security to South Wales. The development pairs 70 MWp of solar generation with 50 MW of battery storage, built at a later stage. This site will provide enough clean power for around 25,100 homes a year over a planned 40-year operational life.

Pairing solar with 50 MW of battery storage is what turns that clean generation into secure, dependable power. The solar produces zero-carbon electricity by day, while the batteries store low-cost power and release it when demand peaks or the grid needs support, adding the flexibility and long-duration storage a renewables-led system depends on. By generating power at home, the project reduces reliance on imported energy and helps guard against volatile prices, strengthening security of supply for the region and the national grid alike. 

As one of the UK’s leading renewable power producers, Infinis has a long track record of turning resources into reliable clean energy. The benefit of combining these technologies is power that works now, low-cost zero-carbon generation when the sun shines and stored energy ready when the grid needs it. 

Local legacy: jobs, community fund and nature

Beyond the clean power it generates, Oaklands is built to leave a lasting mark on the community that hosts it. From the local jobs and supply-chain activity created during construction, to a dedicated community fund, the project is designed to deliver value that endures well beyond the day it switches on. 

The construction programme, supports activity across civil works, electrical installation, construction management, ecology and ongoing operations, extending supply-chain value into the local area and providing for 25 jobs supported during construction.  

A £150,000 community fund, managed independently by Grantscape, has been set up for this project, putting lasting value directly into the surrounding community. 

Oaklands is designed to leave the land richer than it found it: a biodiversity net gain of 470 BNG units through gapped-up and enhanced hedgerows planted to improve connectivity, new wildflower grassland replacing intensive arable land, and tussock and meadow grassland managed on rotation, alongside the protection of existing woodland, scrub, ponds and watercourses throughout construction.
