Commercial Analyst

Location

  • Commercial analysts track contract performance and monitor what is happening in the energy market.  In this job, you could expect to:

    • Review how much power is generated, and check output against market prices
    • Monitor power outage information, check contract details and work with the Operations Team to ensure that energy requirements are met
    • Provide renewable power data to regulators, to make sure that payments are made to business customers.
  • Data analysis experience is very important for this job. You need to be good with numbers, confident using spreadsheets, and able to analyse complex data.

    Some energy industry knowledge is also key, especially how the market operates and terminology used.

  • A lot of the analysis has immediate benefit for the business - you can clearly see the impact of your work.

    Everyone in the team is patient and supportive, and your work is valued.

  • From this job, there’s scope to progress to a senior analyst role.

    The level of business-wide exposure also offers potential to switch to a role in Operations or Development.

  • This job looks after power import and export contracts for the business – for example, checking that export contracts can be billed and paid.

    When new projects come up, there is work with partners (such as the National Grid) on contract volume and pricing.

    There are some technical discussions for new developments – such as making sure that the correct meters are specified and installed on sites, to record power use.

    This job also involves discussions with meter providers to make sure the meter install programme is up-to-date, and any replacements sorted on time.

  • You need to understand how the energy market works, and how financial and political issues across the world affect the UK.

    A power trading background, or experience in commercial energy operations, is ideal for this role.

    An energy qualification which covers market issues, such as an MBA in Global Energy or equivalent, would be a bonus.

  • You get to deal with lots of people and negotiate deals.

  • The Head of Commercial Development leads a team of commercial experts. The team manages relationships with the people we sell our power to, and potential power purchasers.

    This job involves work with development colleagues on new solar and battery storage projects - and exploring options for future technologies.

    Other key elements include keeping track of market changes and responding to government and Ofgem on energy sector consultations.

    You will also monitor markets to see what’s going on in gas, carbon and power.

  • This job requires significant experience as a commercial analyst, with in-depth knowledge of the energy sector. You need to understand how the energy market works globally, and how worldwide changes affect UK energy.

    An energy qualification with market focus, such as MBA in Global Energy or equivalent, would be an advantage.

  • It’s a very varied, fast-paced job; no two days are the same.

    There’s a lot of relationship building. You will often speak with existing power customers, as well as talking to potential purchasers about future deals.

  • As head of service, you’re involved in new business-wide initiatives. It’s a good foundation for future progression to senior management, such as a director role.
